I wrote about my experience with the OpenID account provider Clickpass in the previous blog entry Using Clickpass for OpenID Site Login. I mentioned I would try to install OpenID for use with Clickpass and the CEO of Clickpass left an encouraging reply. This week I tried installing the OpenID Drupal Module. I must say it was a bit confusing, but I was able to successfully log into Startplane from Clickpass. Overall it is a convenient feature, however it is probably only worth the effort if you are running a large multi-user site or want the convenience of logging into your blog from a centralized location such as Clickpass.
Installing the OpenID module for Drupal was as straightforward as any other Drupal module. Once I had installed and enabled the module I logged into Clickpass and under the "Developer" tab I used the "Create New Site" option. I received an OpenID url for this site in the form of:
http://www.clickpass.com/id/xxxxxxxxxxxx
Afterwards I had to edit my account in Drupal to add the above OpenID url. I was then able to log in and out of my account from either Startplane or my Clickpass home page. As I understand it, OpenID is supposed to make registering for new websites easier. I have not tried this on Startplane, so I am not sure it is working properly. However the featured sites on Clickpass make registering for new sites a breeze for end users.
I encourage anyone interested in OpenID to sign up for an account at Clickpass. If you try using your account to log into Startplane, please let me know your experience in the comments below! I'm eager to see how useful others find this new technology.
